Foals (Birth to 6 Months)

  • Birth to Weaning (0-6 months):

    • Colostrum: Essential for the first 24 hours.

    • Milk: Mare's milk or a high-quality milk replacer as needed.

    • Start introducing creep feed by 1-2 months (1-2 lbs daily).

    • Fresh, clean water at all times.

    • Hay: High-quality hay such as alfalfa or timothy (free-choice or 1-2 lbs daily).

Growing Horses (6 Months to 2 Years)

  • Feed a growth-specific ration (1-1.5% of body weight daily).

  • Hay: Free-choice high-quality hay or 1.5-2% of body weight daily.

  • Provide access to clean, fresh water and loose minerals.

  • Gradual introduction to pasture grazing.

Adult Horses (2 Years and Older)

  • Maintenance (Non-Working):

    • Feed a maintenance ration (1-1.5% of body weight daily).

    • Hay: Free-choice or 1.5-2% of body weight daily.

    • Clean water and mineral supplements at all times.

  • Working Horses:

    • Increase feed based on activity level (up to 2% of body weight daily).

    • High-quality hay or pasture grazing (free-choice or 1.5-2.5% of body weight daily).

    • Provide electrolyte supplements as needed during intense activity.

Breeding Mares and Stallions

  • Breeding Season:

    • High-energy feed to maintain condition (1-1.5% of body weight daily).

    • Hay and pasture grazing (free-choice or 1.5-2% of body weight daily).

    • Breeding-specific mineral supplements.

  • Gestation (Mares):

    • Increase feed during the last trimester (1.5-2% of body weight daily).

    • High-quality hay (free-choice or 1.5-2.5% of body weight daily).

    • Clean water at all times.

  • Lactation (Mares):

    • High-protein feed to support milk production (1.5-2.5% of body weight daily).

    • Free-choice hay and access to water.

Special Notes

  • Avoid feeding moldy or dusty hay.

  • Introduce feed changes gradually to avoid colic.

  • Monitor body condition regularly and adjust feed as necessary.

  • Rotate pastures to maintain healthy grazing and prevent overuse.
